East India Company Windus Pattern Musket by Nicholson (1779 Dated)
Maker: British Model: Brown Bess Caliber/Gauge: .76
NSN, .76 Caliber, 38 3/4” barrel with a very good, lightly pitted bore. This is a “NICHOLSON” marked musket with EIC “heart”, Tower private proofs, and William Nicholson’s “WN” trademark at the breech, and a correct “TOWER” marked lock with swan-necked cock. The metal has a pleasant browned patina along the barrel with some mottled gray on the lockplate. The stock has a series of edge splits and chips along the left side, and one on the right adjoining the barrel, while the remainder of the wood has scattered small handling marks and blemishes under an added varnish finish. The brass forend tip, ramrod thimble, trigger guard, sideplate, and buttplate have developed a pleasant yellow-ochre patina over time, with a small “39” on the buttplate tang (unit or rack marking). The musket was manufactured by William Nicholson who was a London maker and contractor to the East India Company from 1779 until his death in 1794 (“Gunmakers of London 1350-1850” by Howard Blackmore, p. 149). The Windus Pattern musket was the direct progenitor of the famous India Pattern Brown Bess, and this example, in very good-near fine condition, may well have been sent to America during the Revolutionary War. In any event, it is a great example of a correct EIC musket, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Antique
