Maker: Draft Horse Model: Back Pieces

These leather back pieces, sometimes referred to as "saddles" since they rests on the horse's back, were designed for use with a team of horse draft horses (at least two). They were made for and used by the Peerless Lumber Company of Sandusky, Ohio. They were obviously designed to identify the company's delivery wagon as it delivered lumber around town, just as today companies paint their names on the sides of their trucks. At some point a "US" military harness rosette was added to each piece. These back pieces are extremely well made and bear the company's name in brass letters. As the photos show, a few letters are missing from each piece. The lettering is only on one side of each since they were used with horses pulling in tandem and the inside half would not be visible when in harness. The black leather is a bit stiff but still solid. These pieces saw honest use and have a great patina. The holes seen in the pictures were to permit the rein loops to pass through the piece, thereby facilitating use of the reins. The pommels are brass. These pieces dates from about 1875 to 1900.
